The men from the Deep South won their first match of the year with a hard graft win over the Sharks, winning 25-22 despite trailing by eight points at the halftime break.

While Nonu remains out, Tamati Ellison made a strong return in the midfield, while Colin Slade and Aaron Smith played among their better games this year.

Ben Smith continued to shine, while the team showed further steel when defending their line despite Brad Thorn being in the sinbin.

Remaining with Nonu at home will be Hugh Blake, Tim Boys, Brayden Mitchell, Bronson Murray, Jake Paringatai, Kade Poki, Buxton Popoalii, Trent Renata, Lima Sopoaga & Frae Wilson.

The Highlanders play the Kings (11 May), Bulls (18 May) in SA and the Force (25 May) in Australia.
