Chiefs back to Pukekohe for Anzac Day
Wednesday, November 20, 2019
Chiefs chief executive Michael Collins said taking the side to the regions within their franchise boundaries was a priority for the organisation.
"We are excited to announce Navigation Homes Stadium as our host venue for the Stormers game.
"We have a tremendous amount of support from our loyal northern fans and we are thrilled to provide Counties Manukau with the opportunity to host. The region has produced a number of talented Chiefs over the years.
"We know the likes of Counties Manukau squad members Nepo Laulala and Orbyn Leger will be eager to earn their place in the 23 to play in front of their passionate home crowd," Collins said.
The Anzac Day game would provide local fans with the chance to commemorate the day at the game which is during the 13th round of the competition.
"We have a lot of Chiefs fans living in Auckland, so we are expecting plenty of them to take the opportunity of a shorter drive to support the team," he said.
Counties Manukau interim general manager Dale Tucker said the Union were excited to have the Chiefs back in Pukekohe.
"It has been six years in the making. We have a lot of young people in our community playing the game that will be excited to see their superstars in our own backyard.
"We are confident that our local community and partners will get behind this great event," he said.
The Saturday night game will kick off slightly earlier, at 7.05pm.
The Chiefs squad start their pre-season training later this month and will play their first game of the Super Rugby season against the Blues at Eden Park on January 31. Their first home game is against the Crusaders a week later on Saturday, February 8.
