Chiefs know how to get out of losing slump – Brad Weber

Rewind back to the beginning of last year and the men from the Waikato went on a four game losing streak before bouncing back to eventually make the playoffs.

The Chiefs are 5-and-0, which is less than ideal for halfback Brad Weber, but they have experience to draw on and they aren’t hitting the panic button just yet.

“We learnt a lot last year and that was a position we had never been in. Now we’ve been there before, so we know exactly how to get ourselves out of it.”

Weber and his side head up State Highway 1 this Sunday afternoon to take on the Blues at Eden Park. He said it’s an occasion the Chiefs always look forward to, and even more so in their current situation.

“If there’s one team we can get up for, it’s the Blues. The rivalry that we have with them is probably number one around this region, so we won’t be lacking motivation there.”

Weber said the coaching team are having to adapt and learn just like the players are in the wake of their frustrating, narrow losses. They are sticking to what they know and still believe a win is just around the corner.

“They [coaches] are having as much of a look at themselves as we are as players, which is great. The plan they have put forward for this week, I think is great and hopefully we’ll stick to it and get a result.”

The Chiefs have lost a club-record equalling six consecutive matches in Super Rugby heading into this weekend’s clash with the Blues. It’s an irrelevant fact for Weber.

“I don’t think there’s any good by saying, look we are on this potential historic losing streak. I just think that breeds negativity around the group and certainly won’t be something talked about here.”
