Dan Carter to play for Southbridge

Dan Carter is heading home to play for Southbridge in their fixture against West Melton at 2:45pm.

The 38 year-old recently signed on with the Blues for the Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa competition, but he hasn’t played a game of competitive rugby since December when his Kobelco Steelers side won the Japanese Top League final.

Carter last played for Southbridge in 2014 and he grew up playing all of his age-grade rugby at the Canterbury club.

It’s a double boost for the club which has been struggling with financial pressure due to Covid-19. Earlier this week, Carter’s 70th Test match jersey sold for $21,300 in a Trade Me auction, in which all the proceeds will go to his rugby club.

The Southbridge Rugby Club’s Facebook page had a bit of a ‘tongue and cheek’ dig at Carter saying “he’ll be wearing the correct white and blue colours this weekend” in reference to the former Crusader joining the Blues.

The Canterbury Rugby Union will be live streaming the top of the table clash on Saturday, so if you can’t make it to Southbridge, make sure to tune into Canterbury Rugby’s Facebook page at 2:45pm to catch all the action.

If Carter gets through the match unscathed, he’ll likely become available for selection with the Blues for the remainder of Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa.
