Hurricanes blow Chiefs finals hopes away

Who scored and when? - Check out the Hurricanes v Chiefs live scoring sheet.

The Hurricanes faithful braved wet, wintry conditions and were rewarded with a resounding victory that put the home side's title aspirations back on track in the Rebel Sport Super 14.

The conditions contributed to a multitude of handling errors from both sides but it was the Hurricanes who settled first.

The home side brought the crowd to life midway through the first stanza with the first of three tries to Hore.

The Chiefs had no answer to a Hurricanes drive that incorporated both backs and forwards and as the dust settled Hore emerged from under the debris with ball in hand.

First five-eighths David Holwell added the extras to make the score 10-3 after the teams had earlier traded penalties via their respective first five-eighths, Holwell and Stephen Donald.

Moments later the stadium shook again but this time Ma'a Nonu was denied a try, losing the ball just as he was reaching out to score.

The Chiefs continued to turn the ball over and infringe in dangerous areas and Holwell's successive penalties, prior to the interval, punished the visitors' indiscretions and extended the Hurricanes' lead to 13 points at the break.

The early stages of the second half proved to be an arm wrestle as the Chiefs exerted huge pressure on the Hurricanes line but were continually thwarted.

Eventually their persistence paid off and after a 15 minute siege second five-eighths Sam Tuitupou finally sliced through to breach the Hurricanes defence.

Donald added the extras and cut the lead to 16-10.

But the Chiefs' joy was short-lived as the Hurricanes struck back almost immediately with Hore burrowing over the line for his second try, following some sustained Hurricanes attack.

Holwell added the conversion to re-instate the 13 point advantage.

Two minutes later the happy hooker was in again to complete the most unlikely of hat-tricks, again burrowing over from close range to secure the game for the Hurricanes, making the score 28-10 and in doing so effectively ended the Chiefs campaign in this year's Rebel Sport Super 14.

The Hurricanes added insult to injury in the final seconds as wing Shannon Paku touched down for the simplest of tries following a perfectly weighted grubber from second five-eighths Tana Umaga.

Replacement first five eighth Jimmy Gopperth added the conversion to make the final score 35-10.

Hurricanes 35 (Andrew Hore 3 tries, Shannon Paku 1 try, David Holwell 2 con, 3 pen, Jimmy Gopperth 1 con.) Chiefs 10 (Sam Tuitupou 1 try; Stephen Donald 1 con, 1 pen.)
