Unless the Sky Super Rugby Trans-Tasman chips fall the Hurricanes way, by beating the Reds and gaining a bonus point in Wellington, and then having the necessary upsets follow, that could be on Friday night.

Laumape, who is heading to France to continue his career, said he was looking forward to going offshore and having fun without all the associated pressures of playing rugby at the highest level in New Zealand. He said he intended to complete his career in France.

Looking to the Reds on Friday, he said he expected the Hurricanes to bounce back from last weekend's loss to the Brumbies. He wanted a good performance so that he could leave on a good note.

Hurricanes coach Jason Holland said he was looking forward to Laumape marking possibly his last game with a performance to remember.

"He's pretty motivated, and loves playing in that jersey, and it could possibly be his last time," he said.

Laumape was a player who consistently got over the advantage line while also providing go-forward for the side.

But Holland said the team was going into its last round of the competition disappointed with the loss to the Brumbies in Canberra because they hadn't been able to play the way they wanted.

"Attack-wise, I thought we were really sloppy with a lot of our play but in fairness to the Brumbies they brought a lot of heat, more than we've had in the last three or four weeks. They put a lot of pressure on us at the breakdown, we didn't get over the gain line and we lost a bit of shape, and didn't play and get the momentum we needed," he said.

While their defence was good, it was their play with the ball that was below par.

There was still a chance they could make a final, but that came down to putting points on the board to force other teams to win their games.

Selection had involved some tough decisions, but the choice for Friday was based on what was best for the job ahead.

"We need to get out and get a performance, and get a win," he said.
