The 38 year-old has been named on the Chiefs bench.
Having made his debut in 2006 for the Highlanders, he played the majority of his Super Rugby caps for the southerners [67] between 2006 and 2012, before having stints with the Reds and Rebels. It will be his fifth appearance for the Chiefs this weekend.
Thomson, who played 29 All Blacks Tests and was part of the 2011 World Cup winning side, can’t quite believe he’s about to reach the special occasion.
“It’s pretty crazy. I let go of this dream [100 games] a while ago, so to do it at this age and at a team like the Chiefs is pretty special so I’m looking forward to it.”
It’s even more remarkable that Thomson is still playing rugby, considering he was bed-bound for two months in a Japanese hospital in 2017.
He suffered a spinal infection and spent 57 days in hospital with lumbar discitis, a nasty infection of the spine.
“It was like that classic stuff from the movies where you see guys walking on poles and I was wearing a big corset with strings on my back, it was pretty gruesome stuff. I lost a lot of weight. I was down to 87kg at my lowest point and I was a pretty sick looking man.
“It took a lot of rebuilding and rugby was off the cards, it was just about getting back to full health. There was a little message in the back of my head telling myself that this wasn’t the last for me and this wasn’t going to be the end of my career, I was going out on my own terms. I’m grateful to be back playing again.”
Thomson will be gutted his former teammate Dan Carter won’t be suiting up for the Blues this weekend. A calf niggle has kept him on ice for another week. Both 38 year-old’s played at school together at Christchurch Boys High in 2000. He’s still expecting to hear from the Blues ‘water boy’.
“He’ll be barking from the sideline, calling me an old bugger.”
Chiefs Head Coach Warren Gatland said it’s a fantastic achievement and congratulated Thomson on his impending milestone.
