Highlanders 24 Chiefs 41
Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan
"We got challenged by the Highlanders, which we fully anticipated. But we got the job done. The boys have worked hard all year, and we're grateful to finish at the top of the table. We know that if we're good enough, we'll play at home for the rest of the competition.
"We've been to the big dance a couple of times and haven't quite got the job done. When those things happen, you've got to reflect on what you can do to get better in one of the areas, which, for us, was an improved set-piece. We've done that, and the other is rounding out our game to be more than just the flashy stuff.
"We have to be able to roll up our sleeves and go through teams when that's required. There were elements of that tonight."
Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson
"We've got some good depth. It's not just the guys you see coming off the bench but also those who don't get lucky enough to play. Some quality players are missing out, but are raising the competitiveness at training and competing hard. That's an area the Chiefs have been doing well.
"We've put ourselves in a good position at the top of the table, getting home advantage for the quarterfinal, and that's all that's on my radar. It is awesome to play at home; it's an advantage.
"Teams don't like going there and we've got to feed off that."
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph
"We didn't play as well as we had against the Crusaders, the best or most consistent side of the competition. But when we get it together and click, you can see the potential in the side.
"The injury to the Chiefs player [Quinn Tupaea] took a bit of the wind out of the sails, and we got ourselves back into the game, and that sort of quality is what the team's about. It's been a tough season result-wise, but they haven't ever given up.
"We have got to get better. Small mistakes against quality teams like the Chiefs just put you away easily. There are a lot of soft tries out there, which is disappointing. But that's footy at this level.
"When our best players are available, we've got a forward pack that can win enough ball for us to play well and create pressure, and with the pressure, you convert that into points.
"We're working hard to grow the experience of the players as well as attract other players who have experience. It hasn't been easy over the years, but that's still part of our job.
"The unfortunate thing about losing is that players tend to lose confidence, and they restrict themselves because they go into eradicating errors, don't want to make mistakes, and let the team down.
"We turned a bit of a corner three or four weeks ago when we took a pragmatic approach to games. We simplified a lot of things to give the players a lot of confidence and licence to play the kind of rugby we needed against the best teams.
"I'm proud of what we achieved."
Brumbies 31 Crusaders 33
Crusaders coach Rob Penney
"I'm proud of the boys and pleased for them. We'll have an occasion on Friday night at home, which will be exciting for us.
"The Chiefs have been playing consistently well for a long period and the teams underneath are building. It's going to be a really exciting next couple of weeks."
About the last try of the game
"Someone once told me 50-50 calls generally end up going 50-50; some you get, some you don't.
"We were lucky enough to just get over the line. They'll be hurting, but they'll also be looking forward to what's ahead."
Crusaders captain Codie Taylor
"The Brumbies are a great side; there's a reason they are at the playoffs every year. We knew we had to come over here and front up physically. Last year, they went down to the wire, and we were on the short side of that. This year, it was the other way around. And this competition's been like that every week.
"We've been on the receiving end of a couple of tough losses but also had some great wins, and this was a close battle, exactly what you want come crunch time."
Blues 46 Waratahs 6
Blues coach Vern Cotter
"There was a theme around making sure we went out and enjoyed ourselves in front of the crowd, and enjoying yourself means you'll give a bit more for your teammates. We worked on that cohesion but lacked a little against Moana Pasifika.
"We saw it in the first half, and they grew in confidence. Our defence picked up and came a little harder off the line. We started hitting a bit harder and got turnovers from that. The variety in the kicking game and moving the ball was nice to see.
"The set-piece and scrum worked well for us, too.
"This was a knockout game for us. We've got to build off this performance and get the same mindset."
Blues No8 Hoskins Sotutu
"Every team is expecting us for the upfront battle. We've talked all year about varying the points of attack, and tonight was the best we've been able to pull it apart and take gaps on their own.
"It was hard not to get over-emotional with players leaving, and this possibly being the last game of the season if we didn't front up. So being able to control our emotions and the way we were accurate on the field, through our carry and all, that's what we were trying to drive and we got the balance tonight."
Hurricanes 61 Moana Pasifika 12
Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw
"We're delighted with the performance. We had a solid week. We knew Moana Pasifika's threats. They've added to the competition through Tana [Umaga-coach] and Ardie [Savea-captain] and how they've played. They've inspired a different group to watch and be involved in the game. We had a tremendous amount of respect for what they've done.
"We prepared accordingly and had a solid play. We put a lot of work into the game in the first half. That allowed us to find that space in the second half and accumulate some points.
"I'm not a huge believer in momentum. I believe in understanding how we want to play the game, building it, and clarifying it. There was a period when we played and didn't overplay. We put the ball in behind; four guys were chasing and put the ball in the corner.
"That shows us we can play in different ways and create pressure in different ways. We've not always been amazing at that. That's the thing I'm enjoying.
"Peter Umaga-Jensen was exceptional tonight. I don't know if it's the best he's played in his career, but since I've been here, he was super-decisive with the ball in hand and set the tone through the middle of the field."
Moana Pasifika assistant coach Stephen Jones
"We're incredibly proud of the players' effort through the season and their improvements. They challenge themselves to grow their game, and our emotion is one of pride.
"When you look at our group and the number of guys who have had their first taste of Super Rugby, it's been a challenging season. We had a high with that Blues victory, and with the fixture list, there have been some tough games at the end of the season, and we couldn't have asked more of the boys; they've given us everything.
"If you look at our group, the ages, and the number of times we've asked youngsters to front up, and if you look at the environments they've come from and not had a lot of NPC rugby, they'll be better for this.
"It's as simple as that. It's steep learning but we'll take it on board."
