Although the Australian teams had struggled early in Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, many were picking a close encounter in Brisbane between the New Zealand champions and the Australian champions late on Saturday.
Instead, it was Mo’unga who shone the brightest with a flawless display in front of 30,000 Reds fans. The 22-Test pivot became the first Crusaders first five-eighth to score a hat-trick of tries and landed eight conversions from eight attempts in his 31-point haul.
The final score of 63-28 was the Crusaders biggest ever score over the Reds and snapped a run of 11 straight home wins by Brad Thorn’s side.
Next week the Crusaders face the Waratahs in Sydney while the Reds host the Chiefs.
