Travel just another challenge for the Chiefs

They opened the competition in Perth, came home to play the Brumbies, and this week fly to Northern Queensland to play the Reds in Townsville.

Added to that there is no bye in the competition which means the Chiefs will be going into their eighth consecutive week of action.

Assistant coach Neil Barnes said that was just a fact of the competition, and it wasn't something they were using as an excuse.

While the side was on a long run of games without a rest, he said the performance against the Brumbies and the energy and physicality they produced was worthy of congratulations, especially after returning from Perth.

They now faced another long trip to Townsville, but it was about getting back on the horse and doing a job.

They would have two good training days at their home base in Hamilton and would be travelling on their off-day, and while that was unsettling, they would be back into their work on Thursday.

Looking at how the Crusaders handled the Reds in Brisbane at the weekend, Barnes said the Crusaders had been 'unbelievably clinical' in what they did.

"I take nothing away from the Reds, they're a good side and like the Brumbies, we'll respect them for what they are and they're unbelievably physical too, so we've got a big match on our hands," he said.

Matching that clinical quality was a goal for the Chiefs because against the Brumbies, they had made a couple of line breaks but didn't finish them.

"We were a step up from where we've been in the past but we all know there is still improvement to make," he said.

Given the long run of games, they were watching for player fatigue. Players needed to show their best consistently, but coaches also had to be prepared to rest players.

That came down to making tough calls to rest players and, at the same time, having faith in the abilities within the squad.

"They're all keen to play, you don't get too many people coming and saying, 'I need a break', but that's about us recognising it. They have wellness sheets they fill out every day and we're always taking that into consideration," he said.

Barnes confirmed that lock Tupou Vaa'i's eye was recovering, and he would be available.

Tighthead prop Angus Ta'avao was looking likely to be available. Utility back Sean Wainui was another who should be considered.
